Suffolk Mind Group Art Project- To be Exhibited at The Minories Gallery, Colchester in August 2019
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
‘Beyond Plastic’ at The Minories in Colchester, August 2019. Guest curated by lead artist Michele Webber An exhibition that explores our relationship with plastic, how it is impacting the seas, beaches and environmental landscape of East Anglia and beyond. There are two parts to the exhibition:
A selection of solo artists, schools and organisations displaying projects and installations is complemented by an open exhibition of artworks in the Girling room. Artwork/installation pieces should…
• address the issues and themes of the exhibition, or
• show how artists can work in re-purposed plastics and other waste/found materials.
Or both!
We challenge you to use materials already in your workspace rather than buying new supplies where possible.
Ideas to consider exploring when creating your display:
What harm is plastic pollution causing in our environment, and how does this affect our lives in East Anglia.
Consider the cycle of plastic use, from home/industry to waste, to sea pollution, and returning to us when washing up on our beaches.
What steps/solutions are being taken by communities and individuals to address the plastic problem? How can artists specifically draw attention to these issues and how can we incorporate recycled/environmentally friendly materials into our own work.
Is recycling the answer or are we just covering up the issues. Do the things we recycle even get recycled?
How can we empower ourselves to stop using plastic? How does our local plastic use affect other countries, and what part do our food, transport and shopping choices play in creating or avoiding plastic pollution.
Our Group
On the 10th July we held our first ‘art workshop’ and began cutting out images from old national geographic magazines and discussed ideas and possibilities. We are all new to the group so are beginning to get to know each other and share our skills.
On the 17th and 24th we hope to begin physically making the piece using 3D objects that we have collected and the collage images. Some group members suggested using key quotes and information about the UN. The concept of ‘Circular Economy’ was raised and the group agreed that we needed to make it accessible to all. Some people suggested audio recordings too.
Week 3 will be very practically based and will involve team work. It is a great chance to meet new people, share skills and raise awareness about an important issue. Everyone is welcome.
